The Unknown Portrait

I am working on a new piece for the magazine, and while I have not seen the home in person yet, from photographs, I am completely in love with one space-- a simple breakfast room with dark beams and white walls, a beautiful farm table and a stunning collection of portraits. There is such great contrast.. it seems like some of the only color in the house. I cannot wait to show you!
I love the idea of unknown portraits. Who knows who these people are; what's their story? I just love the mystery of it all..

Or sometimes just a single portrait can stand alone if it is special enough.

What do you think? Would you have paintings of unknown people in your home? Is that a little creepy?

Fine Art Friday

There was a time, many lives ago when I would get dressed up and go to Art openings on Friday nights. There was a big group in Memphis that did this, and we had a blast-- drinking free wine, getting cultured and meeting fun new people.
Greenwood gets that opportunity tomorrow night, and I cannot be more excited (and not just for the free wine). Gallery Point Leflore is hosting two extremely talented painters, one of whom is a dear friend. I am a super- fan of her work and you should be too.

A little pick-me-up.

In my book, there's not much better than a quick pick-me-up around the house to make me happy. Well, quick and inexpensive.
While there are several projects that need to be finished around here, one stood out as a super easy one to start and finish fast.. the outside dining chairs.
I have had the table since college; it was actually my first dining table. The chairs were handed to me over my fence by my favorite backdoor neighbor when I moved in. He was cleaning out a storage room. I needed chairs.
Win-Win.
The chairs got a couple of coats of green spray paint and a covering of this bright Mexican floral oilcloth, which over almost four years has cracked and torn.

Pretty, huh? But replacement time it is.....
We are going with this black Otomi pattern that reminds me of San Miguel. It's going to be the perfect pop for the backyard, while being dark enough not to get dirty.
And it's only $6.70 a yard.
SCORE.
Here are a few other patterns and colors I was checking out.

I really love this color, but I just wanted a bigger contrast of what I had before.

Seriously considering for the Adirondack chairs... who can sew me some pillows out of oilcloth??
Pretty please??

I love using oilcloth outside. My fabrics are completely open to the elements so they have to be way more durable than just an "outside fabric". It is also a great way to brighten up a yard or patio area.
Check out the website here... Photos of the project to come soon!

I need a Mustard Velvet Settee

{Four Hands}

Market is hard for me. I am always finding the "perfect" thing for myself. I have had to learn to reign that in and focus on the store. We are not getting this settee... but it can be special ordered! We have found some beautiful pieces this trip, things to really pump up the store a little bit.

We are also "rebranding the store" and will also be carrying some very fabulous lines of gifts and jewelry. Some for everyday... and some pieces I might fight you for NYE or Cotton Ball.

Off for more shopping!
Happy Friday!

Cookbook Club

I'm a member of a cookbook club.
That sounds a little dorky, doesn't it.
Don't judge.
It's pretty amazing.
But we need to come up with a better name.

The concept: {8} of your friends {1} cookbook {1} night a month.
Each person is responsible for one dish..we have 2 appetizers, 1 soup or salad, 2 sides, 1 entree, 1 desert, 1 signature cocktail, and, let's be honest, 8 bottles of wine. We rotate through the dishes and through our houses.

We are working through Prime Meridian right now and love it. It's a great way to get familiar with the recipes in one book. You know what's good and what you might not want to try again..

This is the perfect excuse to get out of the house and visit with friends, while doing something creative.
And devouring Torta d'Espresso E Cioccolata.

Which I highly recommend.

OCD Organization

The newest project in my quest to become super- organized....
Turning this antique armoire (that I used for years in Memphis to hold my clothes.)

Into fabulous storage for files and supplies.

Now if only I could find these file boxes for less than $20 a piece!

Monday, Monday

Good Morning, Monday.
Here are just a few things starting my day off right..
The new pillow party on my kitchen sofa. Those black and white pillows have moved around to most rooms in my house. I think they are working out in here now.

The photo shoot that ensued after said pillow party.

And, she's over it.

The mass organization that took place yesterday. Three garbage bags of paper left my house. Ridiculous. Now everything is neat and nice and soon to be color coordinated.

Oh, I found the hood for my next house. That's right. It's awesome.

And a little something fun to look at from my desk.

Gotta run. I'm acting like I don't have to go to work this morning, obviously.

Watercolor Wallpaper

Totally in love with these wallpapers by Black Crow Studios. I'm pretty sure I have posted one or two of these before, but I have discovered their website and am now obsessed.

What kind of art would you have if you had this paper? As a person with lots and lots of hangable pieces, I think about these things. Would you go bare?
Mirrors and Black and White Photography would be the way to go in my house. Not too much, but just enough to say "I'm not scared".

I am searching for some inspiration with the blog.
Bear with me, please.
Surely it will come to me soon.
Til then, happy Friday!

Fig Pizza

Do you have a favorite flavor combination? Peanut butter and chocolate? Strawberries and cream?
I do- hands down.
Figs, goat cheese and procuitto.

Love it. Love it. Love it. A little sweet, a little creamy, and a little salty.
Throw these on a pizza and I will love you forever.
Or, I'll just do it myself.
My grandmother makes fig preserves every year that are the very best.
I actually traded an A on a project for a jar in college.
 Still whole figs in there.
I got pizza crusts from my favorite baker, Donald at Mockingbird Bakery.
I threw them in the oven before the toppings to crisp them up.
Then piled everything on... including some caramelized onion to spice things up.
Throw on a little basil, and Done.
Delicious.
