From Coffee to Cocktails

I wrote several months ago how I needed/wanted an undate on our coffee table.
This one was the first piece of furniture I bought from Pottery Barn when I moved into my house in Oxford in 1998.
Yes, it has been a part of my decor for twelve years.

As you can see, it is pretty heavy looking, very dark and masculine. While trying to stay within budget and still do other things around the house, I decided against a new table and took inspiration from my favorite Worlds Away pieces.
So out came the screwdriver and the wooden top came off...

A can of Hammered Gold spray paint to the base..

And a beautiful piece of mirror went on!

I love how it feels more like a cocktail table..
Just a little more feminine.
This might just be phase 1 of the table renovation.
But more on that another day...

Frida and I are very happy with it.

Welcome to the Jungle

In between spurts of "real work" today, I am working on a design for my friend, Laura Merrill's, living room.
The Inspiration?
This:

We are embracing her grandmother's sofa, because I love it.
The Plan: A little showgirl... A lot of fun..
It won't be quite this wild
but will definately suit her personality!

A Little Lighten- Up

In my quest to lighten and whiten up my living room, I placed a little bid on eBay.
Weeks and weeks later, and after a trip to the post office since I wasn't at home when they tried to deliver,
We had this strange package from Uzbekistan.

Drugs?
Nope, my Ikat pillows!
Worth the wait?
Still deciding, but I am leaning toward yes.

I wish they matched, I think.
They seemed to in the photos on eBay,
so the seller just got a little email.
And that blue book needs to go...
But overall, we are on our way!
A little lighten up is definitely called for.

Weekend Wrap-Up

What a wonderful weekend!
I am completely exhausted, but it was well worth it.
Truely, one of the most amazing wedding weekends ever, and we are so excited for the new couple.. (though kinda jealous right now that they are in Tahiti!)

Jealous?

I'm so excited to be in Telluride,
I am jealous of myself.
Happy Long Weekend!

Has anyone seen this image from Good Bones, Great Pieces? I love the set up with the mirror and 4 small prints..A wonderful balance.
I, on the other hand, need to stop it with the small frames and GO BIGGER with my art..

By the way, I am pretty jealous of the mother- daughter design team (though my mother and I are stars in our own minds)..

Final Touches

I love remodeling and decorating.. but sometimes I come to a stand- still in a room. This is what happened in my bathroom. I have to "live" with changes in order to feel what the room needs.

We put in marble floors and added a pedistal sink and faucet and also a new floor- to- ceiling shower curtain.
New on the list: a mirror and a light fixture.... and possibly trim on the curtain. And new artwork. And new towels.
Ahhh. A list.
Anyway.. These are the fixtures I am choosing from.

Now, The "gold" ones claim to be dark bronze, but I think they are lying. I would have to darken them but that is not a problem. I also do not have an issue with upward pointing lights since I don't do anything detail- oriented like makeup application in the bathroom. I do think the one with the fabric shades is out since it is, well, the bathroom.
Decisions, Decisions.
Mirror options to come soon!

My New Work Friend

Say Hi to Wallace.
He only hangs out at work..
 Frida doesn't know.

Bigger is Better

Though the remodeled laundry/ pantry/ back entry way was 200% better than what we had when we moved in, I was never so happy with those wonky little door knobs.

But, after a trip to New Orleans (thanks, Mom!), a drop off at the welder, and a quick burst of spray paint.
BAM.

What a difference! These knobs don't get lost on the big wall of white or look off- kilter all the time.

Upgrade!
PS...I used Rust-Oleum in "Brown" in the Hammered Finish.
PPS.. Does anyone else keep a b.b. gun by the backdoor?

Signing In

Wow.. It has been a while since I hit that "Sign In" button.
It was a much needed break from blogging, though I missed writing to all 7 of you very much.
I have decided to treat this more as a stress reliever than a committment. I am also going to try and write more about my own home and the things going on around me. I will continue to post inspirational photos ever so often but will try to tie them into my own ideas.
Where to (re-) start?
My mother had a "Be Good to Mary Neff" day this past week.. (What? You don't have those days??) and dropped off some great Happies at my house while I was at work.
She thoughtfully perused my Amazon list and brought this little gem..

This is great book that spends less time focusing on the authors' styles and designs (though the pictures are amazing!) and more effort making the reader realize the possibilities in her own home.
The main thing I loved and learned?
Start with a Plan.
This pertains to design, cooking, entertaining.. life in general.
I have said it before, and I will say it a million times.

I. Love. A. List.

Word.
The book was the perfect "kick in the pants" that I needed!

Now.. Can we talk about how much I am also loving carnations these days??

Don't judge.
