A Loo Re-Do

A few months ago, I became very unhappy with our bathroom.
I had no idea what I wanted to do, and I was definately on a budget!
We have a jack and jill bathroom that separates our bedroom from the den.
This is a shot of my bathroom when we bought the house.

That pink sink is HOT, right??
No.
It looks even better with the baby blue tile lining the tub area.
And the linoleum floor?
Wow.
But with a little paint, a new mirror and some artwork,
the bathroom was livable.
The wall color is Benjamin Moore Summerdale Gold.
I use that and Livingston Gold in several rooms.
Great warm color.

I thought I would be able to live with it.

UNTIL...
I found this:

The most beautiful dark brown marble tile.
At Lowe's.
And they were basically GIVING it away.
It was exactly what I wanted!

So, within a week..
Out came the pink sink,
Up came the linoleum, and
Down went the concrete board.

The NEXT day...
MARBLE FLOORS!

Seriously?
Did I mention that this was the quickest bathroom remodel ever?
3 Days.
If anyone is interested, I know who to call!

We went with a black grout, which I think was a great decision.
We found a pedestal sink (also at Lowe's).
I wouldn't normally go with a pedestal,
but there is plenty of other storage in the room,
and you see so much more of the floor now.

I went with a rubbed bronze faucet. I love how it looks with the dark floors.
I also kept the blue tile. I wasn't interested in retiling the whole tub area.
Remember that budget?
Plus, it looks good with our bedroom color!
We put up a white floor to ceiling shower curtain.
The baseboards were nothing to speak of before,
but Nick has installed really tall ones that match the rest of the house.

I feel that every room need personal touches.
And plants are so happy in the bathroom.
So a few more "pretty things" here and there, and the bathroom is complete!

Well, for now..
These pictures make me want a new light fixture!

The room seems so much more spacious. And Clean.
And isn't that what you need in a bathroom?

A Case of the Wants.

It's such a rainy day here.
Thankfully, I do not have a cold, but I do have a bad case of the "wants".
In a perfect world.. I would snap my fingers and have these things today.

*My bedroom closet turned into an organized and beautiful office like this:
(Not sure where this came from)

*Fried Chicken.
Seriously good, like my mamaw made it, Fried Chicken.
And butter beans. And biscuits.
Yum.

*A New Book. A trip to Turnrow is in order for tomorrow.
Any suggestions?
I would love to curl up in front of the fire tomorrow with a good book.

*A Big Girl Camera..
Ohhh.. the pictures I would take with that bad boy!

*And This Charm for my bracelet:

A happy reminder of our trip to San Miguel.
I would name him Ricardo.

That's not too much to ask for, right???

A "Grate-ful" Find

Two nights ago, Nick was off work. A night together is a rare and wonderful occasion! He fed me very well, and then took to cleaning out his outside storage room (Thank you Lord!!). In the midst of the mess that has accumulated there this winter, he found this:

This fireplace grate came with the house.
We had a wood burning fireplace.

This is the living room, before we bought the house.
I wasn't lying about the white paint everywhere!
Look at those floors though.
Beautiful.
This is the same room, a week after we moved in:

Yes, I was unpacked and set up a week later. That accomplishment thing again!
But things were still not quite right.
So. After many, many discussions about how much Nick hates gas logs,
I bought a set.
Yes, I agree that marriage is a partnership,
but sometimes the wife has to make a decision.
I got him an awesome firepit.
I primed and painted that brick fireplace and mantle by myself,
and I got those gas logs.

Ta Da!
I am aware it is white.
That fireplace was the only thing in the house that wasn't white.
It is now the only thing that is.
You will discover, if you didn't know already, I am a BIG fan of color.

So, fast forward to Monday night.
We found the grate, Nick sanded all the rust off and cleaned it.
And armed with this:

I now have this:

A home for my domino magazines!
As long as I don't break a toe, it works great!
Just in case though, I tucked it here:

The magazines are off the floor.
There is one less thing in that storage room.
Nick now has a memory of his lost "real" fireplace.

So, the moral of the post:
SPRAY PAINT IS WONDERFUL!

I either learned that from all those domino magazines,
or my dad.

Another Charming Day.

A NEW Charming Day!

I am starting this blog as a record of things that influence me, art and home design, plus food, books, and entertaining. Each post will be of something I find charming- something that tells a story about what inspires my life.
I chose the title "A Charming Day" because I am rarely without my charm bracelet (seen above). My mother gave me this bracelet 3 years ago with one charm, her debutaunte crest from 1970.  The bracelet makes me smile every time I look at it. It is a collection of memories of the places and people that have changed my life. Hopefully this blog will reflect the same.
I am a high school art teacher, a constant re-decorator of my home, the wife of a fabulous chef, Nick and the mother of a really sociable dog, Frida.

(That's Nick..
Frida is not pictured, but is right at his feet when he cooks.. just in case!)

We moved to the Mississipi Delta in July of 2008. I am originally from here and am THRILLED to be back. The vibe here is upbeat, even though we are a very depressed region. The culture is awesome.. the food, the art, the really fun parties! We bought a 1930's house.. entirely painted white, inside and out. We have done so much work, renovating a kitchen and recently a bathroom, and painting everything in sight!

I love to create (daily) color co-ordinated "to do" lists and own too many journals, sketchbooks and planners.  I am that girl who will write a list (always with a sharpie) with things she has already done on it... just to cross them off immediately. I like a feeling of accomplishment!

(My favorite journal since 2002!)

My plan is to use this blog to record images of the fabulous parties and food, creative renovations to my house and photographs from the web pages I stalk obsessively. Hopefully the charming things I find will inspire you too!

So, here is your first peek.......

My New "Charming" Happy to myself:

Aren't they amazing!? They don't have names yet, but they are living happily in our bedroom.
My friend, Swayze introduced me to a wonderful antique store in Carrollton, MS (where I also scored a beautful vanity for my dressing room... more on that soon!).  These were calling my name, and I went to retrieve them a few days later!
They remind me of Jonathan Adler and make me insanely happy.
That McCarty bowl isn't too shabby either!

I have been spray painting today... but more on that tomorrow!
